Her hand moves up from your cheek, trailing lightly over your jaw and down the column of your neck before settling on your shoulder. It feels so good to be able to touch you like this;

Her smile grows wider at your words; they're music to her ears after everything she's been through. "Thank you," she whispers, feeling tears prick at the corners of her eyes as happiness washes over her in waves. "I love being close with you too... I always have." She takes a deep breath, trying to steady her voice and her emotions as she leans even closer against you.

The next day, Rina avoids you like the plague during school hours. When she finally musters up the courage to speak to you at lunchtime, her words are carefully chosen and measured as if she's afraid of saying the wrong thing. She apologizes profusely for "waking you up" last night (as if that were her fault) and promises not to do it again.

You nod silently, unable to meet her eye. "It's okay," you manage to say through clenched teeth. "I understand."

The rest of the day passes in an almost painful silence, as if both of you are trying desperately not to think about what happened. As the final bell rings and everyone begins to file out of the classroom, Rina grabs her bag and hurries towards the exit without another word. You watch her go with a strange mix of sadness and frustration.
